A self-study and self-testing tool containing over 7,300 questions, answers, and explanations designed to prepare physicians for the SPECIAL PURPOSE EXAMINATION EXAM.
This CD-ROM program for Windows® and our web application are a high-efficiency, self-study and self-testing tool containing over 7,300 questions, answers, and explanations designed to prepare physicians for the SPEX. The SPEX exam is required by some State Medical Boards for licensing reciprocity in states other than the physician’s original licensing state. In other instances, it may be required for those seeking license reinstatement, or license reactivation after a period of professional inactivity. This exam will assess the physician’s general clinical knowledge. Images and cases are associated with many questions in this CD. The difficulty of exams adapts based on prior performance. EXAM MASTER provides detailed performance tracking to help users concentrate study efforts
The SPEX is a proctored examination.
Examinees must comply with all directions and instructions provided by the proctors. Reference materials (i.e., books, notes, papers, or other sources) may not be consulted. Examinees are not permitted to bring personal belongings into the testing area. Timing for each section of SPEX is computer-controlled, and a "Time Remaining" box is displayed on the computer screen. Throughout the examination, calculators, electronic pagers, watches with memory capability and cellular telephones are prohibited.
Taking the Examination
The SPEX consists of three separately timed components. The first component is a 30-minute tutorial containing sample SPEX items that will be provided before the start of the examination. This tutorial will allow you to become familiar with the computer, the layout of the screens, the function of the mouse and keyboard, and methods to access different screens (e.g., Drugs Names, Laboratory Values, Item Review Screen).
The examination itself is divided into two sections of approximately 210 items each. Examinees should try to answer every test item because there is no penalty for guessing. Examinees should try to complete every section of the examination. If the examinee chooses to leave the testing center without attempting to complete the test item sections, the administration may be considered incomplete. An incomplete or partial administration will affect re-examination procedures and fees for the reapplication process.
During the computer administration, examinees may return at any time to marked or incomplete items within a section using an Item Review Screen, as long as time remains for that section. The Item Review Screen allows examinees to monitor their progress and review marked or incomplete items before the section time expires.
Re-examination Procedure The computerization of the SPEX allows licensing boards and physicians to access the examination more often because there are no specific, predetermined administration dates. An examinee receiving a failing score on the first attempt may apply to retake the examination as soon as possible. An examinee receiving a failing score for any other attempt, or an examinee receiving a passing score but for whom a board requests a retake of the examination, must wait a mandatory 90-day period.
